C’mon ride the train… and ride it!!!
Upcoming Event… Save The Date!!
It’s that time of the year again… My Birthday… My first day as a Bootcamp Trainer… and my conversion to Bootcamp Ceej-E-O… all took place on approximately the same date: April 8th.
It’s a special time of year for me because, in my mind, it marks the date that I found my true calling. As such, I’d like to invite you to celebrate with me as it provides a great excuse for the Bootcamp Family to go out and be social somewhere outside our familiar soccer field setting. Come out and have a few adult beverages with myself and your class mates.
We’ve had an absolute blast with this event and great turn outs in the past. So if this is your first year at Bootcamp, be sure to come out and make some new friends and some new memories.
What: Birth-Camp-Iversary Party!!
Where: Joey B’s (near Manchester and Baxter Rd)
When: Friday, April 6th
(No gifts, please… just come out and have some fun!) 🙂
CJ’s BIG News…
Ok, seriously, when you saw that subject line, what did you think the big news was?
We’re talking about a trainer who thinks fitness is fun here….
So CJ’s big news is probably some new super food he discovered in his research. Woohoo… thanks for introducing me to super kale CJ! (Ok, that actually sounds pretty awesome!)
Or maybe he’s discovered a new piece of torture gear [throat clearing]… I mean, workout equipment, for Bootcamp.
Maybe he’s getting more chickens… 11 just doesn’t seem like enough.
Or perhaps he’s mastered a new ninja move and wants to show off.
All of these would have been legitimate guesses, but all are off the mark.
So without further ado, the BIG news is… [Drumroll, please…]
I’m finally going on vacation!
I went ahead and bought myself a little birthday present in the form of a one week trip to Barbados.
When’s the last time the CeejEO took a vacation?
I had to double check the archives… but the year was 2011. The year the Cardinals last won the World Series. And I was a full-time real estate agent… and a part-time several other jobs…
The trip was to Toronto with a group of my friends.
[Making the best of an extended layover…]
Two years later, April 8th, 2013 (my birthday) was my first day at a new part-time job as personal trainer for then owner, and forever founder of St. Louis Fitness Bootcamp, Johnny King.
Little did I know that “part-time” gig would turn into my full-time gig… and that full-time gig would turn into an ownership roll… and that studying and teaching fitness and nutrition would become my larger passion and purpose in life.
As they say, time flies when you’re having fun.
And sure enough, April 8th, 2018, will mark my five-year anniversary at Bootcamp.
How can I go five years without an extended break? Seven years without a vacation? Forego a normal social life? Wake up at 3am on the regular?
Because I love it!
Bootcamp is more than a job for me. It’s more than a career. It’s an outlet for my greater purpose.
And I also have some perspective on the matter having worked at more than one job that I absolutely H-A-T-E-D… the type where I counted down the minutes to quitting time each day and would have happily let Mike Tyson punch me in the face if it meant I could escape cubic-hell an additional hour early.
In fact, during my tenure as a mortgage closer, my Facebook profile listed my interests simply as: “Escaping”.
Several of my friends thought that was funny… But it was no laughing matter.
I. Wanted. OUT.
I can’t lie to you and say there aren’t days where I wouldn’t mind sleeping in (at least until the sun comes up) or taking a “personal day” to get my head right. But at no time in five years have I desired to “escape”. At no time have I wanted OUT.
Getting to meet and work with amazing, loving people who share my common interest of becoming a better version of themselves… that’s my juice. That’s kept me engaged over the long term. That’s what’s rescued me from a life of cold calls, TPS reports, and “having a case of the MONDays.”
So to every person who’s been to a class, every reader who’s ever replied with words of encouragement, every story that’s been shared, every hug that I’ve received, every commenter on social media (even the trolls who would try to tear me down), and to Johnny King who took a chance on a real estate agent with zero training experience… I owe you all a debt of gratitude.
It’s these interactions and relationships that have sustained me, driven me, and reminded me of my mission… to make fitness fun, to destroy nutrition myths, and to help improve the lives of as many people as I can reach.
Thanks for making it the best five years of my life!
I’m sure you’ve got mixed emotions and lots of questions so I’ll try to anticipate a few…
What are the dates of CJ’s vacation?
April 23rd-April 29th
Why are we just now hearing about this?
This will probably sound silly to you… but I’m a little embarrassed about taking a vacation. I feel guilty about leaving my crew… I feel a little like I don’t “deserve” it. I know that’s wrong, but I feel it none the less. I identify (probably too heavily) with my work ethic. Taking time off just for me feels selfish and unproductive. And yet, I understand, in order to function optimally, we all have to be a little selfish. I tell the moms out there all the time… while you may want to give 100% to your kids, you can’t be 100% for them unless you take some time to fill up your tank first. Sometimes it’s difficult to swallow your own medicine. But I feel like this is necessary. It’s necessary for me to disconnect periodically. It’s necessary for me to remember that there’s a personal side to life. That there’s a time for relaxation, rejuvenation, and recharging. I’m 1,000% looking forward to this trip. But it was unbelievably difficult for me to finally click the purchase button on Expedia’s website. I got all the way to the end of the process three separate times before I finally completed the transaction. Taking time off for myself is way out of my comfort zone… which is probably one of many reasons why this will be good for me. Thanks in advance for your understaning. 🙂
How will I go an entire week without CJ’s expert tutelage and winning smile?
It’ll be tough… no doubt. But remember, it’s only a week. If you need a dose of CJ, search my YouTube channel, or keep this photo as a screen saver to get you through the week.
Will there still be Bootcamp?
Yes! Many of you will get to meet my brother, Derek, for the first time. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to meet a cartoon character in real life… you’re in for a treat. Derek is almost as cool as me, but also very sensitive, so don’t tell him I said that and give him plenty of hugs. Hugs are Derek’s oxygen.
[Embrace the crazy…]
Can I slack off while CJ’s gone?
No way, Jose! Derek’s hobbies include catching Pokemon, chicken-whispering, ninja training, and making random strangers get lower in their squats. You’ve been warned.
Can we mess with Derek?
Of course!… But keep it within reason. He’s my only back up trainer!
Will CJ forget about us when he’s soaking up rays (or reflecting them with his vampire-like skin) in Barbados?
What a silly question. I could never forget about my Bootcamp family! 🙂 I’ll do my best to remember to take pictures and maybe even record a couple of beach workouts for you.
Will you be partying with Rihanna (Barbados native) while you’re there?
I’ve informed Rihanna of my travel arrangements. She knows where to find me.
I gotta give a special shout out to my un-official travel agent, Maggie Travers, who helped me settle on a spot and encouraged me to take action on this when I surely would have kicked this can down the road for another year or so… Thanks a million Maggie!
