Do You Want An Exceptional Life?…

Dr. Srini Pillay asked me a question (via podcast) the other day.  I’ll ask you the same question…

“Do you want to live an exceptional life?”

If you’re like me, the answer is a resounding “HELL’S YES, Srini!  Who wouldn’t want to live an exceptional life?  C’mon ya’ll!  Let’s do this thang, Baby!”

Sensing my enthusiasm, Srini pulls in the reigns of reality…

“If you want to live an exceptional life, you must realize… An exceptional life is a life of low probability.”

Of course, he’s right…

The root of ‘exceptional’ is ‘exception’.

Exception = Low Probability.

Low Probability means the odds are against you.

And since the odds are stacked against you… any rational mind should realize that it’s not even worth trying.  


So our “rational” mind convinces us that what we actually want is to be “normal”.  Because… 

‘Normal’ is probable.

‘Normal’ is rational.

‘Normal’ is reasonable.

The only problem with normal is… normal sucks!

Here’s some other words for normal… Boring, mundane, average, regular, ordinary, standard, typical, commonplace, run of the mill, weak sauce, blah-zay, meh…


The mind is a trip!

We’re hard-wired to seek safety and avoid fear.

The BIG THREE:  Fear of failure.  Fear of success.  Fear of rejection.

So despite the seemingly limitless bounds of human potential, most of us accept a life that is less than extraordinary, less than we really want… becuase to admit we want more, sets us up for a possible failure.

And when our own brain temporarily gets out of the way long enough to allow us to dream of new goals and new summits… the rest of your tribe rushes in to bring you back to “reality”.

“I don’t want to see you get hurt.”

“Don’t set your expectations too high.”

“The odds of that happening are super low.”

“You should be more realistic.”

So I ask you again…

“Do you want an exceptional life?”

If so, you have to throw PROBABILITY out the window.  

I dare you to try and calculate the probabibility of your parents hooking up at just the right time for you to be conceived…  And your grandparents…  And their parents before them…  (Don’t picture it, weirdo!  Just calculate the astronomical odds against all that serendipitiy.)

You’re already an exception!  Stop B.S.ing yourself into believing you were meant to be just “normal”.

There was a wise dude named Jesus who was the most exceptional of all time and by his own words stated, “greater works than these shall [you] do.”

And yet we settle for normal. 

We limit our income, our contribution, our bodies, our minds, our goals, our missions, our expectations because we think that’s the safe bet.

I get laughed at constantly when I tell people I’m going to live way past 100 and be as active and mobile and healthy as ever!

“That’s not probable CJ.  Temper your expectations.  You’re not being realistic.”

People literally limit their lifespan in order to feel “normal”.

And you better believe you can literally THINK your way to an early grave.

People will spout from one side of their mouth, “There’s not enough hours in the day.”

And then from the other side, “I don’t plan to be here at 90.”

Oh really?

You’ve got better plans?

A special appointment with the dirt?

The earthworms can wait, my friend!

This is THE SHOW people!

Why are you in such a hurry to get six feet under when you could be throwing seven different kinds of smoke?

Sure, PROBABILITY may be helpful in some settings.

For instance, if Big Poppy is batting .750 against your team in the World Series… You should PROBABLY intentionally walk him [Mike Matheny]!  (Seriously, WTF!)

However, when it comes to your life’s aspirations, I beg of you, decide what you want first, and throw the probability part of it in the dumpster.

Odds be damned.

Do you want an exceptional life?

Then be the exception!
