Are you dreaming?…

Dan Millman, author of one of my favorite books, The Peaceful Warrior (and about 17 other books), made an appearance on the Lewis Howes podcast recently.

Dan has a whispery, confident, ‘mentor-y’ voice that seems to radiate wisdom and demand attention.  It’s as if he’s drawing from 1,000 lifetimes of experiences.  Perhaps when you write enough stories and create enough characters you become the beneficiary of all their shared knowledge, hardships, and breakthroughs.

During the podcast, Dan told the story of a man who came across The Buddha in the wilderness.  The traveler knows there’s something different about this man but he can’t quite pinpoint it.  He proceeds to inquire of The Buddha, “Are you a wizard?…  Perhaps a king?…  A ruler of people?…”

The Buddha replies calmly and with a single word to each inquiry.  “No.”

“Then what is it that’s so different about you from all other men I’ve ever known?”

The Buddha smiles knowingly now that he’s heard the right question and responds, “I am awake.”

A seemingly terse and even arrogant response when you first hear it.  But there’s a lot of levels in those three words that can pick at your perspective… like a splinter in your mind.

Are you awake??

It’s a profound question that warrants more than a cursory once-over.

Sure, your eyes might be open, but how many of us are living in a dream world?

The very accusation may stir up feelings of anger, resentment, and outright denial.

But each of us does it to some extent.

Dreaming our way through moments and hours and days that amount to our life.


Checking our Instagram feed to avoid the boredom of the checkout line.  Eating when we’re not really hungry.  Checking email to avoid your work, your friends, your kids, your life.

We seek out distraction to “pass the time” all the while forgetting that time is our most valuable resource… the only one we can never get back.

I was asked this week what my favorite movie is.  Without hesitation, I always reply, “The Matrix”.

When most people think of the Matrix, they think of a war against machines… an action thriller… and Keanu Reeve’s ability to miraculously dodge bullets.

And yea, if that’s not already bad@ss enough to make it your favorite, then I guess you could go watch Ryan Gosling in the Notebook for the 1,000th time.  (I get it, dude’s got it goin on…)

But The Matrix holds my top spot for its deeper metaphorical parallels to our own state of reality. 

This is literally a world in which 99% of humanity has been enslaved by artificially intelligent machines and keeps them alive in the simulated dream world known as the Matrix.

Each human slave leads a normal life, eats breakfast, goes to work, helps their landlady take out the garbage… but none of it is real.

It’s the dream world that’s been pulled over your eyes to keep you from the truth.  And you remain dreaming until you are literally, physically unplugged from that system of control.

Sound familiar?

This is not just another fiction story.  This is art imitating life in the realest sense.

Maybe machines haven’t taken over our world… yet.

But maybe, just maybe, we’re nowhere near as awake as we fathom ourselves to be.  

Ever felt bummed out for no other reason than the fact that it’s Monday?  

The Matrix has you.

Does the mention of “The Buddha” offend you as a Christian?

The Matrix has you.

Has anybody ever told you that you’re not good enough… and you believed them?

Oh yea… The Matrix most definitely has you.

Because the purpose of the Matrix is control.

It’s to keep you exactly where you are.

Because you thinking indepedendly… Your pursuit of growth…  Your wakefulfness… threatens the whole system.

I make it my mission in life to unplug.

Unplug from lies, false realities, skewed perceptions, mass distractions, fictional narratives, fake foods, attention suckers, dream killers….

Unplug from the Matrix.

Despite my best efforts… I still find myself being pulled back into the Matrix often.

To avoid this, Millman advises that we each ask ourselves daily, even hourly, Am I dreaming right now?”

He notes that adopting this practice may allow you to manipulate your own dreams while you’re actually asleep in a process known as ‘lucid dreaming’.  (So instead of being at the whims of your subconscious mind which casts you helplessly naked at the front of a full auditorium… you become the puppet master and Ryan Gosling pursues you, clothing optional.  (Your dream, not mine!))

The moral here is that we all need to be more actively pursuing ‘lucid living’ during our waking hours. 

“Awake” like the Buddha.

Or “WOKE” as the kids today like to say.

Are you dreaming?

Are you unplugged?

Are you free?

Or are you a slave to your deceptions, devices, and delusions?

Ask these questions daily… hourly…

It deserves more than a cursory, once-over shoulder shrug.
