Competing With Goliath…
Bootcamper: Did you see??
CJ: Did I see what?
Bootcamper: There’s a new Bootcamp moving in right across the street from you.
CJ: Oh yes, I did see that.
Bootcamper: Are you worried?
CJ: Yes… worried for THEM! (Mwahahahaha!…)
You may have seen… you may have heard… and the rumors are true.
There is a new Bootcamp moving in right across the street from our Manchester location.
Burn Bootcamp is a nationwide chain. Locations in over half the states in the US. Bigger brand, bigger financial backing, and bigger marketing budget than little ole St. Louis Fitness Bootcamp.
So maybe I should be a little worried with another fitness juggernaut moving in on my turf.
Yes, Gold’s Gym and Planet Fitness are only a stone’s throw away… but there hasn’t been another actual “bootcamp” location in my immediate vicinity over the past 4.5 years of my bootcamp tenure. (At least none that I’m aware of.)
So this will be unchartered territory in some respects.
A true life showdown of David and Goliath as it were.
But we all know who wins between David and Goliath, don’t we? 😉
It seems fitting that I just finished a book called “I Am Number 8”.
The title is a reference to that very same David who slayed a giant, became the king of a nation, and whose story is immortalized in the most popular book in the history of mankind… the Bible. (A book which David helped pen as well.)
David was number 8.
That is to say, he was the youngest (8th of 8) in a line of siblings.
He was a “mistake”. He was overlooked. He was undervalued. And he was largely forgotten (by everyone except God).
He spent the early years of his life as a shepherd, largely cut off from all human interaction.
In fact, when the prophet, Samuel, came to the house of Jesse to anoint a new king, Jesse presented only 7 of his 8 sons. David was still off tending to the sheep.
David was a long shot, even by his own father’s standards.
Many thought he was suicidal to take on Goliath.
Many thought he was insane to spare Saul’s life, when Saul was out to murder him.
But David remained true to himself, remained guided by God, and wound up being the most famous king in the history of history.
Not bad for a lowly, forgotten sheep herder!
Now, to be clear, I have no intention of slinging rocks at Burn Bootcamp.
But I do embrace the roll of underdog… The roll of “Number 8”.
My sophomore math teacher thought I was too stupid to be in his honor’s class. I had to fight and go over his head to stay challenged.
My high school football coach (and probably the rest of my football team) thought I was too small to play defensive end. Every opposing scouting report must have agreed with that assessment and tried to attack my side of the defense. Which is why I wound up with the third most tackles on our team.
When the basketball team didn’t think I was good enough, I became a state medalist in wrestling instead.
In my previous career in real estate, nobody wanted to touch short sale transactions because they were too complex, too uncertain, and waaaaaaaaaay too time-consuming. They became my specialty.
Derek told me I didn’t have the skills to beat his time in a marathon. I demolished it the following year.
I’ll grant you that my resume doesn’t really stack up to David’s… but I do know what it’s like to be overlooked, and I do know how to respond to a challenge.
Now… to be perfectly honest, when I first got wind of Burn Bootcamp infringing on my terrain, I was a bit scared.
The mind reels with a list of “What If’s?” and “What could happen’s?”
But after that initial knee-jerk reaction, I regained my calm and landed on one simple truth, “It’s time to step up my game.”
Time to embrace my inner David.
I am number 8.
So, no, I’m not afraid of Burn Bootcamp.
No, I’m not afraid to mention them to you and tell you exactly where they’re located (in the Goodwill shopping center on Manchester Rd just west of 141). Because if you’re that intrigued by the newcomer, I’m probably not providing that great of an experience to start with. And that’s on me, not them.
No, I’m not afraid of competition. I assure you, it will only make me stronger.
And, no, I don’t wish any ill will upon Burn Bootcamp. Because Burn is not just a big business. It’s people… A franchise owner with a vision. Trainers and employees seeking to make a living.
And when it comes down to it, aren’t we really on the same team?… On a mission to improve lives and make healthy living more accessible.
Ballwin may indeed be big enough for the two of us.
Of course, business is business. And the big dogs might crush me like a bug… IF they could catch me! Lol. So I gotta keep leveling up my game.
And while you can exercise at literally thousands of different places in St. Louis (Gold’s, Crossfit, Planet Fitness, Club Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness, Wellbridge, Lifetime, MAC, YMCA, Barre Method, Yoga Six, Orange Theory, Title Boxing, 9 Round, Burn Bootcamp, FitBody Bootcamp and probably a hundred others I’m not thinking of), I think we do have something special going on at STLFBC.
First and foremost, it’s you, the Bootcampers. I can’t tell you how many times noobies come in and make a whole new set of friends the first time they choose their starting station. They all tell me at some point how special our little group is and I couldn’t agree more.
Second, I actually care. Not to say that other trainers don’t. But I know for many of them, it’s just a job. Whereas, for me, it is a mission.
I could probably get away with reading fewer books, listening to fewer podcasts, recording fewer videos, writing fewer blog posts, pursuing fewer certifications, and spending less time coming up with the 197th iteration of the burpee to keep things interesting at Bootcamp. I could probably be a lot less interested in what you eat on the weekends and a lot more interested in cultivating a social life.
And, frankly, maybe I should be…
But it’s hard to ignore your mission when you find it.
It would have been a lot easier for David to return to his sheep (which, I have it on good authority, that he gave them names like, “Heather Flocklear”, “Lambgelina Jolie” and “Wool of Wall Street”) than to choose to do battle with a giant.
But his mission was calling. And he was compelled to answer.
As am I.
Thanks so much for reading this blog. For attending my classes. For watching my videos. For your emails of encouragement. And for your amazing friendship.
You are all part of my flock. And I’ve always got your back.
Here’s hoping you’ll embrace your inner number 8 and take on the Goliaths in your world.
God speed! 😉
