Why Motivation Is Garbage…

I know… odd title for a blog where I’m typically trying to “motivate” people.

But here’s what I want you to do.

First, go watch this 4 minute clip on YouTube of Mel Robbins explaining concisely why motivation ain’t all it’s cracked up to be:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJ88PaL8ls0

Second, watch it over and over and over again… 10… 15… 473 times if you have to, in order to get this concept to sink in.

Here’s the central thesis:

YOU ARE NOT MOTIVATION DEFICIENT!

Every day, Derek and I talk to people who tell us they’re just lacking in motivation.

They go to bed with the best of intentions, but when they wake up, the motivation just isn’t there.

They say they want to change their habits.

They say they want to lose the weight.

They say to themselves 1,000 other goals that they’ll get committed to as soon as they can get “motivated”.

So they WAIT.

Maybe it’ll be here next week.  Maybe after the holidays.  Maybe with that wedding looming.  Maybe on the new year…

Before you know it, a decade has passed and you’ve drifted through it still searching for “motivation”.

Hint:  Motivation is not hiding in your bed.  It’s not at the bottom of a pint of Ben & Jerry’s.  It’s not in your shopping cart on Amazon.

In fact, sometimes, motivation is nowhere to be found at all.

Yes, there are those days when there’s just something in the air.  You hear a great quote.  You read a great post.  You watch an awesome video.  You see a random act of kindness.

And it gives you that ellusive mojo that you’ve been searching for and fuels you through your day.

And then there are days when Tony Robbins, Oprah Winfrey, and the Dalai Friggin’ Lama himself could be sitting at the foot of your bed speaking words of wisdom into your earhole… and you’ll STILL want to pull the cover over your head and hit snooze.

That’s life.

The only difference between those icons we view as successful and the rest of us mere mortals is the ability to NOT feel like doing something… and do it any dang way!

Successful people realize that their feelings don’t matter.

Successful people study the way the brain works and all come to the same conclusion:

The brain wants you to stay safe.  And since nothing difficult or worthwhile EVER feels safe… nothing diffiult or worthwhile ever gets done.

Unless… you override it with DECISION.

I’m going to take a shot in the dark and guess that you don’t always FEEL like going to work.  But I dare you to call in to your boss and tell her you just weren’t “feeling motivated” this morning…. and maybe you’ll show up tomorrow.

Let me know how that plays out for you.

The truth is, your job (whether you like what you do or not) is a need more than a want.  You feel like you need the income, the benefits, the lifestyle it affords you.  So you put on your big girl pants and do what needs to be done whether you feel like it or not.

But there’s a disconnect when it comes to fitness, health, writing a book, starting a charity, building a business, learning to dance, strengthening a relationship, or becoming the version of yourself that you so often pontificate about.

Sure, you say you “want” it…

But “wanting” is what kids do at Christmas.  And maybe that’s part of the problem… we were conditioned at youth into believing that wanting was enough.

When I was a lad, and wanted Ninja Turtles in December, they magically showed up without me having to do anything.

Conversely, when business mogul, super-entrepreneur, and “motivation” man, Gary Vaynerchuk, wanted a Jets jersey when he was in grade school, his immigrant parents told him they couldn’t afford it and grandma knitted him a Jets sweater as a substitute.  Sweet gesture from granny, but little Gary learned a lesson early on that anything he REALLY wanted, he would need to go out and work his tail off for.  Grown up Gary now has his sites set on buying the entire Jets franchise!  (And if I were a betting man, I wouldn’t bet against Gary!)

No, I’m not saying you have to deprive your kids at Christmas to teach them a lesson.

I’m saying that as adults, it’s time to realize that Santa Clause ain’t real.  There is no Motivation Fairy.

And frankly, you may never reach a point where getting up in the morning is “easy”.

It just becomes less hard through practice.

Successful people have rules.

They tend to work out at the same time every day.  They have a regimen where they work out X days/week, non-negotiable.  They only stock their house with certain foods.  They write when they don’t feel like writing.  They make calls they don’t feel like making.  They sleigh dragons that the rest of us don’t feel like facing.  They race towards pain while the rest of us rationalize 1,000 reasons to avoid it.

That’s why they’re successful.

Not because they’re more “motivated” than you or I.  But because they realize the price of success is pain.  And they’re willing to pay it.

Mel Robbins came up with the “5-Second Rule” precisely because she couldn’t get motivated.

So she treated waking up and every other scary, pain-inducing decision in her life like a 5-second rocket ship count down.  When you get to 1… it’s go time… no matter how you FEEL!

Again… go watch this clip:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJ88PaL8ls0

Watch it again and again until it becomes part of your subconcious thought.

Then get real with yourself.

Make some rules.

Decide what’s actually a wishy-washy-pie-in-the-sky-I’ll-do-it-if-I-feel-like-it  WANT… and what’s an actual I’m-burning-the-boats-I’m-slaying-the-dragon-I-do-it-no-matter-how-I-feel NEED.

Then… Wash.  Rinse.  Repeat your way to the life you say you desire.

Remember:  Motivation will not be there when you need it.

So you’d better come up with a stronger Plan B!  😉

Blessings!
