Who says millenials are lazy?
Listening to my man Gary Vaynerchuck again this week. He had two call-ins from 14-year olds trying to build businesses and live their passions.
When I was 14, I was still pretty certain that I would be turning double plays on the infield with the birds-on-the-bat logo splayed across my chest when I grew up. I didn’t really have any back up plan (other than having to lower my standards to play on another MLB team… so long as it wasn’t the Cubs).
I sure as heck had no plans of building a business.
In fact, I had very few plans at all that didn’t involve sleeping in on Saturday mornings or going to see Starship Troopers with some friends. (Hmmmmm…. It’s suddenly becoming clearer as to why I don’t have a locker with my name on it at Busch Stadium).
Gary actually had another 14-year old on his call-in show that got to make an appearance as a guest host.
Youngster, Lincoln Markham, in tandem with his dad, have built up a YouTube channel with a 4 million person subscriber fan base!
Not bad for a little twerp!
So then, of course, the self-criticism comes in…
“14-year olds are light years ahead of you, Bro! Why are you such a slacker?”
I certainly may be biased, but I think Derek and I put together way better content and video quality than that little pee-on, Lincoln… Case and point:
Still Poppin Pills??
What Happens to Cookies at Bootcamp…
Lincoln’s channel is called “What’s Inside” and he literally just cuts things open to see what’s inside.
Evidently, this is somehow entertaining to YouTube nation.
OK… I get that the typical American’s attention span is low (like goldfish-learning-trigonometry low) and one’s desire to see what’s inside a Stretch Armstrong might outweigh one’s desire to know why homegrown eggs are far more nutritious than the store-bought variety…
But I’m losing this particular contest 4,282,910 to 39! (Lincoln’s subscriber count versus mine.)
Clearly I’m missing a few critical factors here…
But I’m also willing to do the work to figure it out.
To be clear, it’s not like I wake up every morning to check my YouTube subscriber count… Fact is, I’ve got bigger fish to fry.
But it can be frustrating when you see a seventh grader absolutely slaying it when on the surface it would appear that you’re out-hustling him… And yet not achieving the same gangbuster results.
Gary talks about this too:
When you look at a show like Shark Tank, it makes it seem like million dollar businesses happen overnight. All you have to do is come up with a great idea, take it to the Tank, say something nice to Mark Cuban about the Mavericks, and BOOM! You’ll have a multi-million dollar business in a matter of months.
(Or you could totally bomb and get labeled a cockroach by “Mr. Wonderful”!)
The reality for most entrepreneurs, business owners, authors, podcasters, influencers, career aspirations, and so on… is it takes a heluva lot of work, grind, sweat, blood, and tears to get to where you wanna go.
Overnight success stories aren’t real.
Just because you know someone’s name today and didn’t know it yesterday, doesn’t mean there wasn’t a crap ton of work behind the scenes to make that dream a reality.
Lady Gaga didn’t just release an album in 2008 and become famous overnight. She started playing piano at 4 years old.
Morgan Freeman is in every other movie you’ve ever seen. But he started acting at 22. Didn’t appear in a movie until 34. And didn’t get a big role until 52.
And little Lincoln isn’t actually a super-lucky 14-year old punk. He’s got a dad on his team that happens to have years of past business and life experiences, discovered how to leverage YouTube ads when they were cheap, and implemented multiple other optimization strategies to see their growth explode.
But we’re always seduced by the Cinderella story.
And frankly, Cinderella herself was suffering for years before her story started with “Once upon a time…” The writers knew you were less interested in the grind that made up her background and more interested in the Bibbity-Bobbity-Boo… you’re a princess!
There’s always a story before the story.
It’s a lot less sexy. But it’s real. And it’s titled, “The Work”.
Which is why it’s a huge advantage if you love the work.
I couldn’t get up at 3am if I didn’t love what I do.
I wouldn’t waste my time recording videos with Derek if I didn’t have some passion behind the bigger message I’m trying to promote.
And I certainly wouldn’t force a blog post out of my noodle every week if I didn’t love the people I was writing it for.
Whether you love the finished product is out of my control. But loving the process is 100% my responsibility.
Don’t let Hollywood snow you.
“The Biggest Loser” would have us believe that fat melts off a body faster than snow melts off of Frosty in a forest fire.
But six years of fat accumulation won’t fall off (healthily or sustainably) in a six week trial.
So enjoy the process of getting in your exercise, learning about nutrition, and optimizing a life that’s built for thriving rather than merely surviving.
The work is non-negotiable. Whether you hate it or love it… is entirely up to you.
No, it’s not always easy to change your perspective. But it’s certainly not impossible.
As I turn 34 this week, I’ll admit that I do still get irked by the millennials pontificating about their “lifelong dreams”.
Just who do these whipper-snappers think they’re talking to, anyway?
But I do admire the hustle.
Maybe if I had spent more time practicing baseball as a kid, you’d have been wearing my jersey to the Cardinals home opener this past weekend. Then again, maybe not… Lol.
It seems irrelevant because I’ve got a new dream now. It’s constantly evolving. And I live it every day.
One of my early real estate mentors once told me,
“Everybody’s waiting for a day in the future when life will finally be easy… And perfect… And sublime…
STOP WAITING FOR THAT DAY! IT’S NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN!”
Yea… Real talk!
And every day that we long for our own ethereal version of perfection, we’re forcing unnecessary suffering upon ourselves by believing in a myth.
And we’re missing out on the gift that is today!
I know you’ve got “stuff” you’re going through right now.
We’ve all got stuff.
And some stuff is much harder than other stuff.
But I GUARANTEE…. that 99-year-old-[fname] would give all of King Midas’s gold to trade places with April-9th-2017-[fname].
Can you imagine??!!… Oh the possibilities!!!
Well my friend… Bibbity-Bobbity-Boo!
You’ve officially got the rest of your life to live your dreams.
Might as well start with today! 😉
