End of an Era…
Well there’s no easy way to say this, so I’m just going to come out and say it…
November will officially be the FINAL MONTH of Bootcamp for our St. Peters location. (DECEMBER 2ND WILL OFFICALLY BE OUR LAST DAY.)
I know this is going to come as a blow to a lot of our St. Peters members who have been so loyal and have expressed to me how much Bootcamp has meant to them over the past months and years.
I can assure you that I didn’t come to this decision lightly.
There was a lot of thought and discussion between Derek and myself to take this massive step.
Allow me give you a little background…
We started St. Peters Bootcamp about 4 years ago, not long after I first joined the Bootcamp scene at Ballwin.
Johnny King (the original founder and Godfather of STLFBC) had made me the head trainer and was quickly adding more responsibilities to my plate. We were talking shop one time when he expressed his desire to open another location and he was looking to take massive action sooner rather than later.
He asked me if I knew anybody that could take on the head trainer position for a prospective St. Peters location. (I think he even jokingly inquired if I had a twin brother that could handle the role.)
I immediately thought of Derek (who is not my twin, contrary to some popular belief, but is 6 years my junior).
Looking back, I’m still amazed how quickly Johnny was able to connect the dots and launch a new Bootcamp in a part of town where nobody knew of our brand or our reputation.
One of Johnny’s strongest attributes was and is his ability to take massive action and ask questions later. In fact, when he made the decision to move to Colorado, he was able to completely uproot and leave his hometown of St. Louis in the matter of a single week and he hasn’t looked back since!
Similarly, it seemed like it took the same amount of time to conceptualize a St. Peters branch of bootcamp and make it a reality as quickly as he could order the gear online and sign a lease agreement with Olympiad.
Derek got some on the job training from “the King” himself and the rest was history.
But a lot can happen in 4 years…
Johnny moved half way across the country.
I became the 100% owner.
The Cubs won the World Series… (Gag me!)
And Derek continued to grow in his true passion which is photography and videography. (A career that he’ll be pursuing more actively going forward).
Bootcamp was a great fit for him while he honed his camera wielding skills.
Because at Bootcamp… Derek got to be Derek!
Wacky, unconventional, funny, outgoing, personable, and always entertaining. Derek not only got to be the center of attention, but he also got to tell people what to do. “Get lower in that squat!”
Even though Derek loved the people and loved the position, a 45-minute commute from Dogtown to St. Peters before sunrise and returning home in morning time rush hour traffic can take its toll on a young man who also aspires to have a late night social life, all while balancing up to three other part time jobs.
So after many talks with my employee/roommate/brother/best friend, we came to the conclusion that he couldn’t keep it up over the long term.
Fortunately, Derek’s photography business has been picking up momentum (he specializes in weddings but does all kinds of photo shoots if you need a guy who can not only prompt a pose but make everybody laugh in the process.)
So my real decision became whether to find another trainer to replace him at St. Peters.
Knowing my clients, I know most of them are there just for Derek. And we face the additional issue of not having a lot of space to work out in at Olympiad.
So rather than trying to simultaneously replace an unreplaceable trainer and try to relocate to allow for membership growth, the most obvious answer was to close our St. Peters Bootcamp.
It truly is the end of an era.
I apologize to our St. Peters faithful and thank you for your loyalty, love, and patronage over the past four years. I know this may be coming as quite a shock.
Bootcamp classes will continue through the end of November however.
December 2nd will officially be the last day at St. Peters Bootcamp. All St. Peters auto-payments have been turned off effective at the end of October. So please enjoy your last month with Der-eek-o.
Derek will not be completely out of the Bootcamp scene however. I’ll be enlisting his help to aid me in providing more content creation, videos, photos, social media, and the like.
AND… as an added bonus, he’ll now be available to substitute train for me at Ballwin should I ever decide to take a day or two off. (It’s been brought to my attention on more than one occasion that there is life that takes place outside of the metropolitan St. Louis area… I’m still pretty skeptical about these claims, but may need to investigate further at some point.)
You may still have some un-answered questions…
Will I be re-opening in St Peters?
Will we bring other locations that are right next door to your house?
Will there be more class times available?
Will CJ ever write a post that doesn’t last longer than an episode of Seinfeld?
Who can say such things?
I don’t know what the future holds.
What I do know is I love what I’m doing. I love the process of honing my skills as a trainer. I love every new scrap of science I can find about nutrition. I love the people I work with. I love practicing what I preach. I love the obstacles. I love the questions. I love the stories. I love the opportunity that having a back-up trainer could present for me. I love the potential for this business. And I love my brother and hope this change will be beneficial for him in ways we can’t even begin to imagine yet.
To my St. Peters peeps, I hope that Derek has helped you to rediscover your love for fitness, your affinity for energy, and helped you come to the conclusion that working out and living well is your God-given right, and not the hated chore that society makes it out to be.
You will continue to be a part of the Bootcamp family. I will continue to check in with you every week on Sunday via email until you decide to scroll to the bottom and click “Unsubscribe”.
I wish you all nothing but the best. And I trust that you won’t let this obstacle keep you from getting your workouts on in some way, shape, or form.
You’re stronger than you know.
Thank you sincerely from the bottom of my heart for everything you’ve done to support me, and Derek, and Bootcamp! I cherish your stories. And I cheer for your continued success. Reach out to me any time.
