The Wheel in the Sky Keeps on Turnin’ My Friend!
Last week I shared with you a list of my goals for 2018.
And I got some great feedback from my peeps.
Some of you were impressed with how much I’m trying to take on.
Some of you were inspired to write down your own goals and share them for accountability.
And some of you pointed out that I’m notably lacking in the department of my personal goals.
I joked with many of you that, “I have a goal to get more personal goals!”
However, as I reflect, this is a glaring weakness in my game that requires some attention.
Yes, Bootcamp is more than business for me. It’s very, very personal.
Of course, I enjoy the products and services of many businesses… but I wouldn’t consider my relationship with most of them as “personal” in nature.
I mean… I’m a big fan of Trader Joe’s, but I couldn’t tell you the first name of any of the cashiers who regularly check me out.
I appreciate the service that Amazon provides, but CEO, Jeff Bezos, never returns my phone calls.
Maybe you’ve know your pediatrician longer than you’ve known me (btw… you may be ready for a “grown-up” practitioner), but, hopefully, you don’t need to see her on a daily basis the way you see me daily at Bootcamp.
You don’t ask your mailman about his dating life.
You don’t share stories about your kids with the teller at the bank.
And you don’t wear Halloween costumes to impress your pizza delivery guy. (As if you ever order pizza… 😉 )
Bootcamp. Is. Personal. #Lawyered
That being said, I need to do a better job of taking care of me.
When a mom becomes a mom, they sometimes lose the part of themselves that was just them. “Karen the Mom” vs just Karen.
It’s not a perfect analogy… I ain’t your momma. (Although I have helped many of you with your boo-boos and constantly nag you to eat your veggies.)
But it’s similar in that I’ve wrapped my identity in this trainer/bootcamp/health guru persona.
Just like a mom, I have no regrets.
But also like a mom, if I let my personal identity disappear, eventually everyone around me suffers.
This was reinforced by a book I just read this week called, The Paleo Cure.
Towards the end, author Chis Kresser, includes a number of quizzes to test your health in various categories.
I usually love taking these kinds of quizzes… in the way a Star Wars fan would enjoy doing Star Wars trivia… this is kind of my wheel house!
As you might expect, I did ace the first couple of tests. But as I moved down the list, I realized that I’ve gotten a bit lop-sided too.
Nutrition Test– Aced
Movement Test– Aced
Sleep Test– Could be Better
Stress Test– Could be Better
Pleasure Test– Failed
Time Outdoors Test– Failed
Play Test– Failed
It felt a little like my results on the ACT back in high school (a 23 if you must know)… it didn’t seem to accurately represent my perceived level of aptitude.
Of course, the purpose of such tests is not to make you feel like a failure. But to bring awareness to areas that might require more of your attention.
So yea, that goals list might have to get a little bit longer… but all in the name of maintaining a saner and more complete Ceej-E-O. (Or perhaps… just “Ceej”.) 😉
Thanks so much for all of your feedback. It was another hidden benefit of sharing your goals… your peers and loved ones may enlighten you on areas in which you’re lacking and didn’t even know it.
Alrigthty… I’m gonna go look for a book on “Play” so I can figure out how to ace that test.
Just kidding!… Kind of. 😉
